That’s right – your low price on custom barcode keytags is in part due to a recent trip I made to an IKEA store in Atlanta, GA. Whether you’ve ever been to an IKEA or not, you are probably aware that it is a mega-store offering ready-to-assemble furniture. On my trip to IKEA, I was surprised that while walking through a store that felt 2 or 3 times bigger than the biggest Home Depot I’ve ever been in (also in Atlanta), I was never once approached by a sales person!
Now don’t get me wrong, I was really just there to browse the store and for some reason had just always wanted to see what exactly was inside these massive blue and yellow buildings. But I did think it was odd that I meandered through the entire store without ever once being contacted by someone trying to sell me something. Heck, the last time I was at Home Depot, I was not more than 5 steps inside the store and someone was trying to sell me a new furnace … weird!
It wasn’t until I was at the end of my journey and leaving the IKEA store that it all started to make sense! There were several informational signs in the stairwell as i was leaving, and one of them said referenced the fact that the company had deliberately designed the entire process of shopping there to be “self service” in order to control costs. From the paper and pencil you pick up inside the front door, to the industrial sized carts provided for you to cart your furniture, to the computers with design software located throughout the store, IKEA just tried to make everything as intuitive as possible, and without the need for salespeople tripping over each other to make a commission I must say the low prices reflected this!
And what perfect timing for me to visit this store, Fall of 2012! I was just contemplating how busy my online keytag sales company had gotten over the past year, and that it was time to bring on some help to manage the orders. But how to bring on more staff without raising prices? Over the past 5 years, while our prices on custom barcoded keytags have stayed the same, the cost of just about everything needed to run this business has gone up! Was it time to raise prices?
It turns out, no – it was not time to raise prices! The fact is, while the economy is showing signs of improving, I don’t think any customer wants to be told that there is going to be a price increase! So instead of bringing on more staff and raising prices, I decided to leave the prices intact! Truth is, we could have raised prices by 10% and we would still have the lowest prices avauilable on custom keytags, but why raise prices if there was another way?
And the other way to keep prices low is to keep our costs inline and streamline our operations, just like IKEA does! So with the power of technology, we have decided to do what the world’s largest furniture retailer has done, and design everything around “self service”. What does that mean to you? Well for one, there may not be a live person available to answer your questions. Fortunately, between our faq page and our helpful YouTube videos, you’ll probably be able to find the answer to your questions on your own.
